Each are at different stages of their careers, but both are masters of these principles.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the summer, several people approached me for career help. These people ranged from soon-to-be college grads to seasoned professionals. And I\u2019m always happy to share career advice from the perspective: &#8220;Here\u2019s what\u2019s gotten me to where I am.&#8221; And I believe that when it comes to careers, advice for adults and students is one in the same. In fact, I\u2019d even advocate that the more mature your career, the more important it is to have a student-like mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, if I could distill 20 years of professional experience into 5 pieces of career advice, whether you\u2019re early, mid, or at your peak, these would be it\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Work for and with the smartest people you can.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who you work for and around matters more than what you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proximity to sharp thinkers who are \u201cahead\u201d of you accelerates your growth like nothing else. Smart <a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/what-is-an-individual-contributor-vs-lead-vs-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leaders and managers<\/a> model how to solve problems, communicate clearly, and decisively balance intuition and logic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if the job title isn\u2019t perfect or you\u2019re not passionate about the product or service itself, being in the right room to observe, ask questions, and absorb how great people think, is everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Make connections (and nurture them).<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relationships are the currency of a meaningful career. The best opportunities, whether they\u2019re new jobs, promotions, or new clients, rarely come from cold calls or applications. They come from people who know you. In fact, 40% &#8211; 80% of jobs come from connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/go-first\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Go first.<\/a> Stay connected consistently, before you need something. Recommend a great candidate for a role or refer a client to a colleague. Meet for coffee to share ideas. <a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/use-a-professional-thank-you-note-to-stand-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Send a thank you note.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genuine connection isn\u2019t networking; it\u2019s building a relationship, bit by bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Stick through hard moments, and own your career.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s are many points throughout one&#8217;s career when things get uncomfortable: the job changes, leadership shifts, or you feel like you\u2019ve outgrown your role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s tempting to jump ship. But if you\u2019re with a growing organization and a leader you respect, stay curious before you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have proactive, honest conversations with your boss or sponsor about your goals, what you\u2019d like to learn next, and ask for <a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/how-to-receive-feedback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">feedback<\/a> on what gaps you need to fill to take on more. Growth comes from traversing the <a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/learning-pit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learning pits<\/a>, which are part of the growth journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our beloved Tammy used to say: \u201cOwn your career.\u201d This means leading your career conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Be generous with credit.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the best ways to build trust and influence is to make others the hero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you share credit openly: thanking the teammate who helped you behind the scenes get a win, or you acknowledge how past bosses and mentors got you to where you are, you (ironically) give people more confidence in you. It makes them want to be on your \u201ccareer team\u201d even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sharing the credit adds fuel to your career engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Work hard, and be impeccable with your follow-through.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people speak about the follow-up. I care about the follow-through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Follow-through makes you stand out. It elevates you, in influential people\u2019s minds. In my own management and sponsorship of people (and hiring employees and outsourced business partners), I\u2019m always watching for the medium and long-term follow-through. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Follow-up is sending the email within 24 hours of the meeting. Follow-through is closing the loop, finishing strong, and making sure no detail is left hanging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When people with power know they can rely on you consistently, you become the person they want to bring alongside them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Careers aren\u2019t straight lines. They\u2019re shaped by the consistent, small choices that define who you learn from, how you work, and how you show up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re just starting out, take this as career advice for students: learn relentlessly, connect meaningfully, and own your growth. If you\u2019re further along and thinking big-picture, return to these same principles. They don\u2019t change.
