After all my years of work, spanning levels, industries, functions, and the globe, I\u2019d never heard those two words paired together. The context was: he was talking about his career and lack of desire to ever become a manager. Instead, he sought a career path of technical growth, allowing him to continue doing \u201ccool data science stuff\u201d (whatever that means) as <em>an individual contributor<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This conversation lit an \u201caha\u201d in me. For a long time, I&#8217;d deeply studied and practiced the difference between being a lead vs manager. Yet, I hadn\u2019t ever contemplated that some (excellent, BTW) performers <em>want<\/em> to remain an individual contributor. Which led me down a path of more study and learning in action, until I was finally able to articulate: What is an individual contributor vs lead vs manager? And how does each one intersect with the other?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Vocabulary Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shared language creates clear expectations and minimizes misunderstanding. When you know <a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/position-agreement-performance-objectives-for-employees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exactly what a role entails<\/a>, you can set goals, evaluate performance, and develop people more effectively. This is especially important in creative small business teams because every seat is high-leverage &#8211; for good and for bad. The leap from doing, to leading, to managing, can make or break the business growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plus, job titles often come with ego and assumptions <em>(HUMANS. Am I right?)<\/em>. By separating titles from responsibilities<em>, <\/em>and using a shared language, we can align on what success actually looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And before I get into each, I want to state an important thruline upfront: one is not better than the other. Each person should manage their own career in a personalized way for them. They shouldn&#8217;t blindly pursue going \u201chigher,\u201d hierarchically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. What is an Individual Contributor (IC)?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An individual contributor is responsible for delivering results through their own work. They are not formally responsible for managing other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Traits &amp; Skills:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strong execution and reliability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow-through and personal accountability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technical or service expertise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strong communication (especially to manager, teammates, and client\/vendors if applicable)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emotional intelligence to navigate their learnings in the job, relationships, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Note:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>In the Ellevated Outcomes universe, successful ICs should also embody leader qualities. In client-facing businesses, especially those where the owner is no longer the bottleneck to growth with Ellevated Outcomes\u2019 help &lt;wink wink&gt;, ICs are not just \u201cdoers;\u201d they do work that requires them to be trusted guides within their area of expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means taking initiative, communicating proactively, and creating a sense of trust, internally and externally. You can\u2019t lead a client through a decision or a transformation without presence, personal gravity, and credibility. These are leadership behaviors and a great example of the first intersection of individual contribute vs lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Lead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>A lead is someone who steps into leadership (ideally, without being asked) via informal influence over others, internally and\/or externally. They do not necessarily have people management responsibilities. This is an important distinction between lead vs manager. One of my biggest pet peeves is when people interchange the words leader and manager; they\u2019re not the same!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As my friend, mentor, and sponsor <a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/friendship-and-business-annmarie-camp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Annmarie Camp<\/a> says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leadership is the act of being followed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Traits &amp; Skills:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Takes ownership of cross-functional or small team efforts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guides and mentors peers or junior team members<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Serves as the go-to person in their area of expertise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Models company values, <a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/setting-and-upholding-job-expectations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">standards, and expectations<\/a> <em>all the time<\/em>, because they know that others are watching and taking cues from them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communicates upward and across, effectively<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lead may not manage people on paper, nor have a call-out box on the <a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/my-favorite-canva-org-chart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">org chart<\/a>. But they\u2019re leading by example, influence, or initiative. That\u2019s the bridge to management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Note:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone may desire to stay in an IC &#8211;&gt; Lead position forever, growing their career with technical depth, substance, and influence (like Dave). This is a great growth path for that individual and certainly a standalone career. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, others may want to parlay this into management. So, what\u2019s a lead vs manager?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Manager<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A manager is accountable for others\u2019 results. They lead a team, manage and allocate resources, develop talent, and ensure outcomes are achieved by orchestrating and holding others accountable to their actions and outcomes. They\u2019re no longer solely executing their own work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Traits &amp; Skills:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Anticipatory thinking and proactive problem-solving<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coaching and developing people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organization, orchestration, and building systems that scale<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emotional maturity, self-awareness, and egolessness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Managing up, down, and across with exceptional communication and <a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/how-to-receive-feedback\/\">feedback<\/a> skills <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Note:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common mistake I see is promoting a high-performing IC &#8211; or even a solid mid-level manager &#8211; into a high-level management role before they\u2019ve developed the leadership skills to truly hold that seat. Often, the person is an incredible master of task or project execution, but they haven\u2019t yet developed the emotional maturity, communication skills, or self-awareness required to lead others at scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BTW: this was me in my late 20s\/early 30s too. So there\u2019s no shade here \u2013 just an observation. And it&#8217;s nearly impossible to teach this, but it can be learned through experience (via intense <a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/learning-pit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learning pits<\/a>; lots and lots of learning pits).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our beloved Jon Dalman of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madebymesa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mesa<\/a> recently said something about management that I\u2019ve repeated countless times on his behalf. It\u2019s so brilliant and spot-on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being a manager is a deeply creative job; it requires seeing a gap or a need and <em>proactively<\/em>, creatively solving it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the rise of <a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/tech-tools-for-small-business-5-things-to-automate-before-you-hire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">automation<\/a> and AI, administrative management is fading. Straight up: it no longer adds value. In its place, what\u2019s rising in value?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Creative, emotionally intelligent, proactive management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So How Do These Roles Layer Together?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of these three roles as a progression of scope, not value. Every business needs ICs, Leads, and Managers to thrive.
