Do it too soon, and you may strain your cash flow or bleed money (and frustration) on duplicated efforts. Wait too long, and you may feel too burnt out and busy to make the <em>right<\/em> hire. So how do you know when it\u2019s the right time for small business hiring?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personally, I believe that hiring is one of the most (perhaps the most-most?) important moves a Small Business CEO can make. Because your team is small, perhaps even just yourself, adding another body, brain, and energy to the mix will have major effects, and they can be incredible or debilitating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So today I want to walk you through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>how to know if a hire is right for you,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the tipping points that indicate: <em>it\u2019s time<\/em>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>where to begin hiring (even if you&#8217;ve already been doing it).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. How Do You Know If an Employee Is Right for You?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before looking outward for the \u201cright hire,\u201d look inward. What kind of business are you building? In <a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/whats-your-long-term-goal-for-business-3-paths-to-help-you-decide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this post on long-term business vision<\/a>, we outline 3 small business end games:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lifestyle: maximized for flexibility and owner take-home pay,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Legacy: designed to grow beyond the owner for sustainability, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Start-Up: built to scale ASAP, boosted by outside investment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re building a Lifestyle business, you\u2019ll likely remain solo (perhaps with contractors). Your motivations in staying small are often: protect your time, retain all the money you can, and\/or constrain your responsibilities. After all, building and nurturing a team is a momentous responsibility. Anyone embarking on this path must understand this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But on the other hand, if you&#8217;re building a Legacy business or Start-Up, hiring is essential to scale operations, serve more clients, and build a company that can run without you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019d be remiss to not say: the case for a Lifestyle business is compelling. Who wouldn\u2019t want more flexibility, money, and little responsibility?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there <em>is <\/em>a reason \u2013 nay a deep purpose \u2013 to the build beyond yourself: <a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/why-growth-is-essential-for-creative-business-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">giving your business, your employees, and your career a future.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">JUST DO IT ACTION<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s your long-term vision? Don\u2019t think too hard; go with your first intuition. Are you building a solo practice or a business to live beyond you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your answer determines how essential hiring really is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. What\u2019s the Right Time to Hire?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most business owners hit a point where growth stalls\u2014not because of lacking demand, but because they\u2019re doing everything themselves (and not well, at that). If you can feel yourself creeping toward this ledge, ask these questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are you spending lots of time outside your zone of genius? In other words, do you spend &gt;20% of your time on things that drain you?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are you turning down new business?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Could a hire generate or save you money?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is client service slipping?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are you missing new revenue streams or creative opportunities?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In other words: are you the bottleneck to growth?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These questions come from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kitces.com\/blog\/solo-advisor-ria-when-to-hire-employees-capacity-wall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kitces&#8217; \u201ccapacity wall\u201d model<\/a>. Though his subject matter is financial advisors, the themes can be applied to any business with a service offering. TLDR: he believes you should hire is you&#8217;re consistently working at or above capacity; and therefore, the business is suffering or stagnating because of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">JUST DO IT ACTION<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grab a notepad or your Notes app and answer each of the 5 questions honestly. If you say \u201cyes\u201d to any of the above, you may be at the hiring tipping point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Where Should You Start?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before posting an \u201cApply here\u201d post on Instagram (I see you, creative business owners ;)), take these steps to prepare wisely. And as always, the more thorough the prep, the easier the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705 <strong>Track your time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re not sure what takes the most of your day, it\u2019s time to dust off Toggl (or any time-tracking tool) and log your work for 2 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705 <strong>Get clear on what the business needs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How much of your work can be standardized through clear processes? Documenting workflows now will save major onboarding headaches later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705<strong> Automate everything you possibly can, first.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/tech-tools-for-small-business-5-things-to-automate-before-you-hire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">You\u2019ve heard me wax poetic about this.<\/a> Technology can do so many things that we used to have to hire for. Automate anything and everything you can first; then hire for roles that require critical thinking, creativity, or a personal touch. It\u2019s how you\u2019ll get the biggest bang (and scalability) for your buck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705<strong> Plan for impact.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once this role is trained, what will <em>you<\/em> do with the time they free up? Focus on high-impact activities: <a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/develop-a-marketing-and-business-development-culture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">generating more business<\/a>, launching a new product, refining systems, or developing new revenue streams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705<strong> Know the real cost.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a> (and personal experience\/math, ha), salary only accounts for about 68% of an employee\u2019s total cost. When you\u2019re estimating the cost of your hire, add 20\u201330% for taxes, insurance, and benefits. Then run a 1-year forecast with and without the hire. What expenses might they eliminate? What revenue could they protect or generate?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">JUST DO IT ACTION<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choose 1 energy drain to eliminate or automate. Do it for 2 weeks, then come back to your energy drain list and keep eliminating and automating until you reach an item you <em>need<\/em> to delegate to someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thought on Small Business Hiring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After reading all this, you may be thinking, \u201cNooooo thank you. I will opt for a solo Lifestyle business, after all.\u201d If so, I understand. Small business hiring and building a team requires immense effort, money, and the piece that many don\u2019t speak of: <em>emotion<\/em>. And real talk: none of these have quick returns; they\u2019re all long term investments. You won\u2019t do it \u201cright\u201d the first time. It\u2019ll take experimentation, failure, and climbing out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/zudigitest.com\/ellevatedoutcomes\/learning-pit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learning pit<\/a> to try and try again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But here\u2019s my advocacy for small business hiring. I believe that for creative, small businesses, there\u2019s no way to make a greater impact, skillfully combining business and humanity. To create career and financial opportunities for people by doing incredible work, paying them well, and caring for them.
